Magazine clippings have been the "staple" of collage artists for decades. Let's take a look at how a couple of artists have been using these cuttings in their art:

What can we do with them outside of these ideas, though? There's so much opportunity for magazine clippings (or magazine cuttings, depending on which term your prefer); the trick is thinking outside the box. Here are some suggestions:
- When "matting" a large photograph, alter the mat with magazine clippings. How? Measure about one inch away from the edge of the mat and draw a light pencil line all the way around. Then, add the magazine clippings from that line to the edge of the mat. Then, frame the picture as you normally would.
- Create a background for cards. How? Fold your cardstock in half, or to the size you're interested in creating. Cut another piece of cardstock that's one inch smaller than the card (for example, if you have a 4x4 card, cut a 3x3 picece). Cover the smaller piece of cardstock with magazine clippings and affix it to the card in the center. Add smaller pieces of cardstock over this magazing clipping layer.
- Alter a book cover. How? When creating your own journals, handmade books, altered book covers and altered composition books, layer magazine clippings using gel medium and then coat over the entire piece to seal it all in.
